Chapter Fourteen

Queenie crunches into the parking lot. April is out of sight on the other side of the arena. Great timing! I can talk to Queenie right now, and April will never know. I jump out of April’s car and jog over to Queenie’s. I tap on the window.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, jammer girl. What’s the big hurry? And why were you in April’s car?”

My words came out all together. “I got dropped off early and it was raining but I really have to talk to you about something okay?”

“Whoa. Slow it down a notch, kiddo. Grab these cones and help me bring them into the arena. Then we’ll talk, okay?”

With a stack of cones almost as tall as me in my arms, I follow Queenie into the arena. “Listen, I know you wanted to chat, but how about we make it after practice? I’ve got a big announcement to prepare for the team. I want to make sure I have all the details set up, okay?”

April, her hair wet and stringy from the rain, strides into the arena with her gear bag over one shoulder and her phone in hand. Her phone. Did I relock the screen after I snooped? April doesn’t look my way, so I think I’m in the clear. Phew.

There’s no point in trying to talk to Queenie with April in earshot anyway. I’ll have to wait until she leaves.

“Okay, Coach. Sounds good.” I drop the cones in the center of the track. What’s this big announcement though? A new transfer skater? It had better not be someone else who is going to push me out of the running for that MVP spot.

After the rest of the team rolls in and skates a few warm-up laps, Queenie whistles and calls us into the center of the track with her usual stern practice voice. “Bring it in!”

April, earbuds in, is doing her usual laps and sit-ups circuit.

“That means you, too, Powers!”

April screeches to a halt and coasts toward the rest of the team.

When she has all our eyes, Coach begins. “You all know that we have our big season closer game coming up in a couple weeks. And that it’s against one of the toughest teams in the area, Midtown Mini Mayhem.”

Kat scowls. “They’re good. But we’re good. We’re better!”

“I have every faith that you can totally win it!” continues Queenie. “However, what I wanted to add is that we will have a guest joining us in the audience for the game.”

Oh, thank god. Not a guest skater. Just an audience guest. Maybe it’s the mayor or a sponsor or something. The owner of the Pancake Hut?

“I’m sure you’re all familiar with Creek City’s adult team, the one Amy and I play on. Well, one of our teammates will be sitting in the audience, doing a little scouting for next season.”

An A-team scout? Usually you have to wait until after you’ve turned eighteen to try out for the adult-level teams. Which can mean waiting a whole year depending on when your birthday falls.
